Helen M. Gollmar

Helen Gollmar, 97, of Baraboo, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at SSM St. Clare Hospital.
Helen was born on March 7, 1920 in the Town of Merrimac, to William and Iva (Niles) Martin. She was a 1937 graduate of Sauk City High School and attended Madison Business College. After passing the Civil Service Exam, Helen was hired by the City of Madison where she worked at the TB Sanitarium and then for the City of Madison Attorney’s Office.  
Upon the onset of WWII, Helen was hired by the Federal Government and worked for the Army Corps of Engineer’s Purchasing Office in the Badger Army Ordinance Works, where she procured supplies for the general contractors, Mason & Hanger. With the end of construction, Helen worked in a Chemistry Lab testing powders at Badger Army Ordinance.   She then was employed at the Merchandising Mart Building in Chicago, replacing lost, stolen, or destroyed Savings’ Bonds.
Helen returned to Baraboo and worked for the Sauk County Welfare Office from 1946 until 1955. After her children were old enough, she worked part-time at the Excelsior Creamery, the Sauk County Treasurer’s Office, and Stone Abstract. She was hired by the Sauk County Abstract Office and worked there until her retirement in 1985.
On June 12, 1948, Helen was united in marriage to Wayne T. Gollmar in a private ceremony at the home of Rev. Zimmerly.   Wayne preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1983.
During her retirement, Helen volunteer many hours working at St. John’s Lutheran Church and at St. Clare Meadows Care Center. She enjoyed the Altar Guild and Bible classes at St. Johns and going to the Civic Center for the Senior Exercise Class.   All her life, Helen enjoyed sports especially baseball and softball.   Her first date with Wayne was at a Badger Football Game. She will be truly missed by her family and many friends.
Survivors include her two sons, Jeffrey Gollmar of Amherst and William (Suzanne Marchant) Gollmar of Wauwatosa; grandson, Christopher Gollmar of Brooklyn, New York; granddaughter, Kathleen Gollmar of St. Paul Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce (Ross) Genrich,   Esther (Harold) Platt Jr., and Jean (Herman “Junior”) Ziehmke.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 624 East St., Baraboo, with Pastor Nicholas “Nick” Maglietto officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be held in Walnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. John’s Altar Guild or the Baraboo Dugout Club would be appreciated by the family. The Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., Baraboo, is assisting the family.
