Baraboo, WI – Robert Lawrence “Bob” Roth, age 89, was eclipsed out of our lives on Friday, October 27, 2023, having passed away peacefully, being ever so “Nearer My God to Thee,” resplendent in his contribution toward “Our vines hath tender grapes” (Song of Solomon 2:15). He was born August 22, 1934 to Oscar and Bessie (Hynek) Roth of Hillsboro (Vernon County). Bob attended Hillsboro High School class of 1952, graduated with an FFA certificate, ran track and field, and overcame speech and language difficulties through singing, being a gifted tenor vocalist in SPEBSQSA and Wisconsin State quartets. In 1960, Bob met Berlaine Mohr of Iowa, at the dance hall in Yuba, Wisconsin, and they were united in marriage on June 2, 1962. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary traveling to New Orleans by tour bus in 2012. Bob practiced land conservation techniques on the 240-acre dairy farm in Juneau County, having bought the 360 degree-view hilltop farmstead in 1959, and where one of the area’s first pole-sheds was constructed as experiment on-site. After the 1979 tornado that wiped out two outbuildings and the 1980 fire that destroyed the barn, granary, and stockyards, Bob continued to work the land for crop rotation, hay, some experiments with tobacco (briefly, due to moth damage), cords of wood, raising steers and calves to sell. This was all done while working at Wisconsin Dairies milk receiving station in Union Center, and then at Pace Industries of Reedsburg. The 200 acres was parceled out in 2000, including transplantation of the century-old Concord grapevine, and a new pole-shed and Kickapoo Homes house was built on a remnant 40 acres until auction in 2015, when they moved to Baraboo and became members of St. John Lutheran Church. Bob was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro where he served in various capacities which included usher, choir, church council; the Czesky Den Singers 2007; elected president of the Czech heritage organization 2012; was asked to join the Viroqua Men’s Chorus 2013; and was “on-call” at many local funeral homes or singing engagements, performing over 200 solo tenor musical arrangements. He always said that it was music that saved him from being sad about the grieving inherent of loss, including the loss of his hearing most recently. His God-given voice was unique in that he could project as a solo tenor but could also blend to sing in harmony with other voices of all caliber. In April of 2023, Bob and Berlaine moved to an assisted living facility in Portage. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, David in 1966; brother, Richard in 1990; and a sister, Mary (née Havlik) in 2022. Baraboo, WI. - Jeanne Sharon Pribbenow of Baraboo, peacefully passed away in her sleep on June 19, 2023 after triumphing over cancer for the fifth time. At 89 years old, on the last day of spring, she reunited with her parents Leonard and Della, husband Arnie, children Lynn and Steven, and brother Lynn. Born on April 23, 1934, Jeanne was a compassionate and hardworking farm girl. She fondly recalled winning a beautiful baby contest, playfully reminding her brother Lynn of her victory. Animals held a special place in her heart, particularly Belgian horses and farm life. After graduating from DeForest High School, she embarked on a train journey from Chicago to San Francisco, igniting her passion for travel. Jeanne married Arnie Pribbenow, and in June of 1969, they bought a farm on Hwy 33 in Greenfield Township, WI. Together, they raised their children Lynn and Steven, witnessing weddings, births, challenges, and celebrations within their home. Jeanne lived a fulfilling life, finding happiness in her family, friends, farming, gardening, fishing, birdwatching, and exploring. She and Arnie mischievously enjoyed their winters in Arizona, and later she embarked on numerous adventures across the country with her best friend Jackie. Road trips, a memorable airplane flight, and a helicopter ride to a glacier created cherished memories for her. Jeanne dedicated herself to serving others both professionally and personally. She volunteered from a young age and never turned away stray animals that found their way to her farm. As a caretaker for her husband and children, she maintained an exceptional sense of humor through it all. Recently, Jeanne celebrated her 89th birthday surrounded by dear friends and family, deeply moved by the abundance of flowers and overwhelming love. Amazed by the number of visitors, she marveled, "Can you believe all that fuss over an old lady?" Those fortunate enough to call her friend or family could understand it perfectly. Jeanne would want us to emphasize her strength, independence, resilience, and intelligence. She would be slightly annoyed if we mentioned her selflessness, generosity, profound love, unwavering optimism, humor, beauty, tender-heartedness and kindness. Jeanne was the epitome of a cherished friend and the embodiment of the kind of person we all aspire to be. She giggled while speaking of her husband even twenty years after his passing. As a mother, she loved her children tenderly and defended them fiercely. She embraced the role of the world's best grandma, enchanting her grandchildren with magic cookies, healing powers for boo-boos, and helping them reach new heights for more imaginative mischief. Jeanne is survived by two grandchildren, Sarah of Florida and Charles of Virginia; her cousins; devoted friend, Jacklyn; and several beloved friends and neighbors. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral or celebration of life. Friend's and loved one's are invited for a luncheon which will take place at Mama Mia's Restaurant, 113 3rd. St., Baraboo, on Saturday, September 23, 2023 starting at 2:00 p.m. Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., in Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Baraboo, WI. – Billee Lou Miller, age 93, of Baraboo, passed away at her residence on Saturday evening, May 27, 2023 surrounded by family and loved one’s. Her passing follows a lifetime of devotion to them. It’s what she wanted, to be at home with her loving family by her side. A lot of incredible people helped make it possible: ICare; Home Instead; healthcare and homecare specialists; St. Croix Hospice; Sauk County Aging and Disability Resource Center; Corner Drug; and the caregivers and family that provided home care for her. It definitely took a village. Billee Lou entered this world on March 25, 1930 as the daughter of Dora and Elmer Parrott, Manchester, Iowa. She was sister to Syble and Carole. In the early 1960’s Billee Lou and Raymond’s lifelong dream of owning a farm became a reality. Rural Cazenovia, in Richland County, became the home to raise their children. Crawford County, above the Wisconsin River, was the farm where their grandchildren learned about life on a farm. Billee Lou had a myriad of life skills, which the farm life demands from them. She worked hard and was a prolific gardener, seamstress and did other “handwork.” Billee Lou baled hay, milked cows, volunteered at the local election site, and was mother hen to three generations of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Upon retirement from farming, Billee Lou and Raymond worked alongside each other at Devil’s Lake State Park. They worked there for ten years and were affectionately known as Ma and Pa. In addition to her parents, husband and sisters, Billee Lou is preceded in death by a son, Elmer; and her beloved dog, Dog. Family that will live without her physical presence include children, Billee Lou (Alice Anderson), Sheila (Bob Swatsell), Bryan (Patty), Blane (Linda); 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and Jak, the cat. Baraboo, WI. – Dr. Kenneth Brian Grant, Ph.D., beloved husband of Mary, loving father of Katie and Michael, and doting granddad of Hadley, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 31, 2023 at St. Clare Hospital. Ken was born January 25, 1948, at the University of Chicago Lying - In Hospital, to Joseph and Josephine (nee Friscia) Grant. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Gerald Warren Grant. Ken attended St. Daniel the Prophet Elementary School and St. Laurence O’Toole High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from DePaul University, and earned his Master’s and Ph.D. from Marquette University. Ken and Mary met at DePaul and were married in the summer of 1971, following Ken’s basic and advanced infantry training in the Illinois National Guard. They moved to Milwaukee so Ken could pursue graduate work in English literature. Mary was his best friend and really at the center of his life, as he was for her. More than anything, Ken loved spending time with Mary. They honeymooned in Montreal and traveled together to more than 20 countries and numerous states. They spent most weekends together at their lake house, where they enjoyed time with cherished friends, cooking together, and of course, "wine o'clock." After they both retired, they enjoyed competing with one another over the daily crossword puzzle, and working together to solve the Wordle. They traded books back and forth, offering recommendations and reviews. Their 51 year marriage was built on a foundation of love and friendship. Ken was a diligent gardener and jogger, known by many as “that runner with the ponytail.” He loved cooking and eating good food, and because of his extensive travels, he was able to eat at some of the finest restaurants in Europe. He traveled as far west as New Zealand and Japan, and throughout Europe as far east as Russia. As a Francophile, he was delighted to take his daughter and granddaughter to Paris. He enjoyed exploring Japan with his son. He was immensely proud of his children, Katie and Mike, and granddaughter, Hadley, never missing an opportunity to share stories of their adventures and accomplishments with friends and family. He taught at UW Milwaukee for a semester before beginning his teaching career of 31 years at UW Baraboo-Sauk County. Ken served in Illinois National Guard reaching the rank of sergeant. He was at National Guard summer camp when he was invited to interview for a position at the Baraboo campus. He arrived for the interview in his military fatigues and he was always convinced they helped earn him the position, which included teaching at a medium security federal prison, FCI Oxford, as part of the load. He began his academic career as academic staff and rose through the ranks to become a full professor of English. He served on the Academic Senate, as Chair of the English Department and Chair of Chairs of all the academic departments across the thirteen two year campuses. He retired as Associate Dean of the campus and returned after retirement to take on the role of Dean. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study biography at New York University. Ken was a well-respected and admired professor selected by students countless times to be “Teacher of the Year” awards until he said “no more.” Ken was active in the community, serving on and chairing the Baraboo Community Scholarship Committee and the August Derleth Society, while also being a member of the Sauk County Library Board. He also belonged to the Sauk County Historical Society and the Baraboo Range Preservation Association. He was a long-time and generous donor to the Baraboo Food Pantry, the Nature Conservancy, Public Radio and Public Television. He took great pleasure and benefited from being a member of the Fox Line City Food Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Ken’s love spilled over to his hobby of stamp collecting (philately). He was an avid, respected and extremely well-loved stamp collector nationwide. He was founder and president of the Baraboo Area Stamp Club in 1979, remaining active as president until his death. He was a member of the American Philatelic Society (APS) for many years and ran in 1999 for a seat on the American Philatelic Research Library Board (APRL). He served that group continuously from 1999 until 2022, with only a brief gap from 2012-16, when he served as the APS board secretary. He sat on multiple APS and APRL committees, including the USSS-Mueller and Charles Peterson Awards committees, strategic planning committees, APS personnel committee and more. Ken has demonstrated tremendous dedication to the APS and its missions throughout his life. One of Ken’s most important accomplishments involved the American Philatelic Center, the largest organizational home of its kind in the world. He was one of the APS leaders who signed the initial paperwork to purchase the Match Factory and was a part of the support and decision-making process for every phase of construction up to its completion in 2016. For his service in these many areas, Ken was awarded the 2020 Luff Award for Outstanding Service to the APS, the highest award given to a living collector by the American Philatelic Society. When Ken was not working on behalf of the APS, he was highly dedicated to his local, state and specialty stamp clubs, editing Across the Fence Post, the publication of the Wisconsin Federation of Stamp Clubs (WFSC) (2007), Badger Postal History (2005-18), publication of the Wisconsin Postal History Society and the Cinderella Stamp Club’s publication, The Cinderella Philatelist (2009-22). He also served as a board member for WFSC from 2005-18 and as secretary from 2018-present. He also served on the board of the Postal History Society from 2018-20. In addition to editing publications and serving these organizations, Ken wrote dozens of articles for multiple philatelic publications over the years, including those mentioned previously, The American Philatelist, Postal History Journal, American Stamp Collector & Dealer and others. For his dedicated service and contributions to various phases of philately, Ken was also inducted into the Wisconsin Philatelic Hall of Fame in 2014 and was invited to sign the Maurice Williams Roll of Notable Cinderella Philatelists in 2018. He also loved getting together with a few of his collecting friends regularly to just “talk stamps.” You can speak of what a person has accomplished and Ken has an impressive record, but there is so much more to know about him. He was a sweet, loving, kind, generous, compassionate man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. He enjoyed plays at American Players Theater, football and basketball games, the annual Codger Brat Softball game on campus, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He delighted in seeing friends, colleagues and students do well. He gave his students who had no place to go an open invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. Whether a person knew Ken for many years or just a few, they all say they “love Ken,” as do we his family love him and miss his huge loving presence in our lives. The family wishes to thank Dr. Randy Krszjzaniek for his exceptional care, and the staff of second floor west at St. Clare and the Infusion Center for their gentle nursing. A Celebration of Ken’s life will be held at the Fore Seasons Restaurant, at the Baraboo Country Club, 401 Mine Rd., Baraboo, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Everyone is invited to share a story about Ken. Those wishing to make a memorial gift in his name are encouraged to support the Baraboo Campus Scholarship Program, the Baraboo Food Pantry or the American Philatelic Research Library. Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., in Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.

West Baraboo, WI. - Lois Mae Gibson, "One of the sweetest ladies you'd ever meet", died at the age of 90, on Friday, February 17 2023. Lois had diabetes for many years which she learned to deal with. Then she successfully survived a heart surgery in 2021 at the age of 89, but finally was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May of 2022. Being 90 years old, Lois chose not to pursue treatment for the diagnosis of cancer. She accepted the fact that she'd lived a good life of 90 years and prayed she'd just die peacefully in her sleep one day. To the glory of God she went several months without much pain at all. She became weaker and more tired but didn't have much discomfort until just recently. Her health began to suffer from what was assumed to be the cancer. Lois had experienced a couple of significant falls, then her body began to weaken quickly once the cancer took hold of her just within the last few weeks. Her fighting spirit wore out as well and was ready to go to her heavenly home. She was so tired. She wanted to live to be 92 she said, but the Lord called her home in His perfect timing. She'll be so missed! Lois was born to Louis and Helen Truax in Weirton, West Virginia in 1932. She married Darrell Swiger in 1952 and they had a family of five children. The family moved from Illinois to Wisconsin in the late 1960’s where they made their home in White Creek , WI. Lois took her first job in Wisconsin as a cook for the Castle Rock Grade School in White Creek. She also taught Sunday school and sang in the choir at the White Creek Church. She held various jobs through-out her life including a favorite, cashier at IGA store in Adams, WI., a cashier/bookkeeper at Lake Delton Mobile Station and a Clerk at Winnebago Gift Shop in Wisconsin Dells. She was a hard worker her entire life, but at the same time a great mother. Lois worried and prayed for her children until her last breath was taken. Lois will be remembered as one whom loved to talk and visit with friends. She was a wonderful mother, a dedicated employee and a loved homemaker. After her children were raised and became adults, she found a love and a talent for shooting pool. She was proud of the several trophies she had received for her wins. In the most recent year, she spent much time feeding the squirrels and the birds, cooking, talking with her children on the phone, and she found a love for doggies, as she spent much time with her daughter's dogs giving them treats and taking care of the house while her daughter was at work. Lois was preceded in death by her first husband, Darrell Swiger in 1981. A few years later, she met Arthur Gibson of Baraboo, who had lost his own beloved spouse. Lois and Arthur married in 1992 and had a marriage of 26 years before Arthur preceded her in death in 2018 at the age of 92. Lois and Arthur “Vern” Gibson had many many good times together visiting family and friends and going for breakfast. They enjoyed traveling, fishing and just enjoyed life. Those two loved to laugh and tell stories. They especially loved spending time with Arthur's much loved nephew, Dan Hiller and his wife, Ruth. Lois loved Ruth so very much! Lois was one of eight siblings, five sisters and two brothers. She has one surviving sibling, a brother, Carl Truax (Jeannie) of Pittsburg. PA. Also surviving are her children, Darrell Swiger Jr. (Barbie) of Duluth MN, Larry Swiger of Adams, William Swiger of Necedah, Rebecca Swiger of West Baraboo, Mark Swiger of Fort Atkinson, and her daughter, through her marriage to Arthur Gibson, Julie Rose (Dennis) of Baraboo. Lois also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren and her favorite doggie, Sprout. Her nieces and nephews will miss her as well. She was great at keeping in touch with them even in her elderly years. In addition to her two husbands and six siblings, Lois was preceded in death by a beloved granddaughter, Chelsie Swiger, Lois's spirit is gone from her earthly body here, but she began her eternal life in heaven on February 17, 2023 because of her faith in Jesus Christ. Lois had confessed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and she knew He was her only way to access heaven. She believed what the Word of God says. Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” We have all sinned. We have all done things that are displeasing to God. There is no one who is innocent. Romans 3:10-18, gives a detailed picture of what sin looks like in our lives. Romans 6:23b, teaches us about the consequences of sin: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The punishment that we have earned for our sins is death. Not just physical death, but eternal death! Romans 6:23, “But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:8, declares, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus Christ died for us! Jesus’ death paid for the price of our sins. Jesus’ resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus’ death as the payment for our sins. Romans 10:9, “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Because of Jesus’s death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in Him, trusting His death as the payment for our sins - and we will be saved! Romans 10:13, says it again, “for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death. Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Lois will be missed here greatly but, she'll be united in heaven with all people that place their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. John 3: 16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God is good all the time! Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. noon, on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Crossway Baptist Church, 1007 Washington Ave., Baraboo, with Pastor Bob Buchanan officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Crossway Baptist Church, specifically for the Bus Ministry.
