James Karch, age 93, of Baraboo, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2020, at a family house in Merrimac, where he has spent time in recent weeks with his children, grandchildren, pastor and caregivers. Jim was born in Hartford, Wisconsin in 1927, the youngest of three children of teachers Charles and Lillian Karch. After Charles left teaching, the family moved several times during the depression, including to Merrill and Baraboo, Wisconsin and Monroe, Michigan. After his father’s death, Jim and his mother returned to Madison where Jim graduated from West High School. He served briefly in the Navy in 1945 before attending the University of Wisconsin Madison for both undergraduate and law school, graduating in 1952. He was introduced by a friend to nurse Marilyn Lepley and they were married in 1953 and settled in Baraboo where he had begun practice with the law firm Langer and Cross. After several years he began a long solo practice before being elected Circuit Court Judge for Sauk County in 1975. He served as a Judge in Sauk, Forest and Florence Counties. In what may have been the favorite part of his law career, his final work was as a substitute judge in over 50 of Wisconsin’s counties. He was a very conscientious judge, deliberate and careful in his analysis and rulings, considerate to parties, witnesses, jurors and anyone else in the courtroom and focused on timely decisions so participants could get on with their lives outside the courtroom. Early to work, even as a visiting judge, he startled staff who would find him sitting on the courthouse steps drinking coffee when they arrived to open for the day. Jim was dedicated to community service throughout his life, including serving as a Scout Leader (before his sons were in Scouts), leader in Kiwanis, Member of the Baraboo City Council, on the Committee which led to the creation of Boo U (Baraboo-Sauk County Campus of UW Platteville), Guide at the Circus World Museum, Director of the Friends of Devil’s Lake, and driver for Meals on Wheels. Jim was an engaged father, teaching his children piano, arithmetic and games, and taking the family to enjoy natural beauty, especially Devil’s Lake and a woodlot in Honey Creek, and historic sites, including the Circus World Museum several times each year. He also organized and led the family on activity packed family trips to Yellowstone, Florida, New York and California. Jim and Marilyn’s middle child, Kimmy, died of leukemia when five years old, a loss that stayed with Jim and Marilyn all their lives. Jim and Marilyn were very active after their children were grown, including extensive travel and camping with a Road Trek van, a summer living and working at Old Faithful in Yellowstone, and frequent visits to Devil’s Lake to hike and swim. They also spent a lot of time with grandchildren, on trips, attending sporting and music events, playing games and providing much needed extra help to granddaughters with special needs. Jim was a musician, playing trumpet in big band swing music in High School, in the Navy, as an undergraduate, as a law student and continuing after he moved to Baraboo. After that he played the trumpet in Church and in a family band with his children and grandchildren, many of whom became good musicians with the help of his encouragement and teaching. He was also an actor, appearing in many Baraboo Theater Guild productions, including as Mayor Shinn, in his favorite musical, The Music Man. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents; his sisters, Kathryn and Helen; and daughter Kimmy. He is survived by his sons, Gary (Ann Beal) of Glen Ellyn, IL, Paul (Anne Sontag) of Madison, WI; daughters, Julie (Doug Matthews) of San Diego, CA, and Sharon (John Nielsen) of Woodbury, MN; grandchildren, David (Brynn), Aaron, Rachel, Lydia, Sam (Kate) and Chas (Sally) Karch, Mark and Russell Matthews, Paul and Beth Nielsen; and great-granddaughter, Eloise Karch. The family thanks the many caring people in the Baraboo community who helped Jim, especially over the past several months, including the residents and staff of Oak Park Place, and the staffs of the SSM Health System, BrightStar Care and Agrace HospiceCare. A family graveside service was held on Monday, November 16, 2020 with Pastor Lisa Newberry presiding. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church, 416 Ash St., Baraboo. Bernice “Bernie” Genevieve Denzer, age 92, of Baraboo, passed away in her sleep on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020 at At Home Again Memory Care in Rio, WI. Bernie was born in Newport Township on June 29, 1928 to parents, Ross and Mildred Hansen. Ross passed away when Bernie was an infant. She and 3-year-old sister, Virginia, lived with maternal grandparents, Hannah and Theodore Tofson, until school age when they moved back with their mother. Richard “Dick” Salem and their mother courted for years, finally marrying when Bernie was a teen and Virginia in college. Shortly after, her parents added brother, Jesse Salem, and moved to California. Dick was always “dad” to Bernie, never step-dad. Bernie, nicknamed “Butch” by high school friends, graduated from Portage High School. In 1946, she and Gordon “Gordy” Denzer married. They bought a farm near Portage where they could raise their six children; Danny (Darlene) Denzer, Denise (Arvid) Berge, Ross Denzer, Jude Denzer, Robert Denzer, Jane (Tom) Chamberlin. Bernie has nine grandchildren; James Hawley, Stephanie Curtis, Lana Houtman, Travis Cornford, Quincy Denzer, Avry Denzer, Asa Denzer, Tom Chamberlin, Justin Chamberlin; 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and one on the way. After the farm house burned in January 1962 and the barn blew down in a tornado in spring, Bernie and Gordy built a new home across from the Baraboo River by Cascade Mountain Ski resort. After becoming empty-nesters, they moved near the Baraboo Crane Foundation. For many years Bernie managed Marv’s Shoe Store in Portage. She also drove school bus, receiving good driver awards each year. Later, she took a job at Rayovac, serving as Union Steward, little but not afraid to stand up or speak up. After retiring, she had too much energy to be idle, so began working as a home health aide. She loved that work and made many special friends. Bernie was a voracious reader. At age five, she walked to the Portage library demanding a library card. The librarian explained she had to be in school and know how to read first. After demonstrating she could read, she got her card. Her day started with a pot of coffee and crossword puzzle. She and Gordy enjoyed travel. After retirement, they spent summers in Ontario, Canada camping and fishing, with treasured memories of family and friend visits, happy hour and card-playing. Bernie was a fierce supporter of friends and family and generous to their needs. Her motto was, “I never meet a stranger”, and always quick with a hug. Bernie was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Gordon Denzer; infant son, Ross; grandson, Justin Chamberlin; sister, Virginia; brother, Jesse; and companion, Harold Bulgrin. Bernie's family, friends and acquaintances are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, May 15, 2021 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Baldwin Funeral Service, 520 East St., Baraboo. Pictures and memories to share can be given to a family member or brought to the services. Memorial donations in memory of Bernie can be made to At Home Again-Rio, or the charity of your choice, or sent to the funeral home. Heartfelt thanks to At Home Again-Rio who took such good care of Bernie; Laurie Golden at Upper Chamber; Mary Sorenson, her angel during the most trying of times; Hospice and others who assisted with her good welfare.

Per his wishes and in light of the pandemic, there will be no formal services. Baraboo – On April 3, 1948, a boy was born to Ralph and Dorothy Bradley in Edgerton, Wis. They say, “Everyone has a book inside them.” This was certainly true of Tom, but to record all the stories and adventures of his lifetime would take volumes. Tom died July 10, 2020 at the age of 72. As a child, Tom was independent and adventurous, exploring the fields and streams of Dane County with keen sense of interest in the bigger world around him. He attended a one room school until 8th grade and went on to graduate from Stoughton High School. As a teenager, he was defiant and reckless, wanting to be where the action was. Though he loved and respected his father, the owner of BFS Construction Co., Tom resented being expected to spend childhood summers digging footings, laying block and pounding nails. He had a yearning to explore the world and even ran off to Hawaii to spend summers on the beach. He felt free living hand to mouth, surfing and hanging out with friends listening to a young band led by Carlos Santana practicing on the beach. Other summers were spent bar tending at the Show Boat and Reef in Wisconsin Dells. In his early 20’s, Tom became the owner of the Norse Chalet in Stoughton and discovered his life-long love of restaurants and cooking. He fought a restless soul though, and just could not stick with one endeavor resulting in the buying and selling of many restaurants and businesses over the years. His intelligence and enterprising abilities led him down many paths. He fished shrimp off the coast of Florida and had and exotic car business. He was a foreman on the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. He was one of the first vendors at the Madison Farmer’s Market and loved selling produce. He obtained his pilot and real estate licenses. He lived on a boat in a marina in Okland, California. He owned a jewelry store and bought and sold many items at flea markets over the years. He ran his own construction company until his health began failing in the early 90’s, loved wood working and making “old things look new again.” Tom had an inventing mind, working with the Fishing Has No Boundaries charity to develop a prototype production he called the “slick stick” to help handicapped individuals fish more easily. He developed another product which helped carpenters lay out construction studs more efficiently. Tom enjoyed developing businesses, but was often his own worst enemy. He trusted others to run them and was often taken advantage of. He did not follow through on paperwork and legal documentation which resulted in many legal and financial struggles over the years. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder later in life, which was very enlightening, but not before struggling with the fall out through many endeavors. Tom met Alex Jordan in the early 80’s and began traveling the world over in search of rare or unusual items to offer Alex for the collections display at the House On The Rock. Tom also fabricated many items in his workshop in McFarland for Alex. To this day, many of Tom’s “finds” such as the carriages, the ivory, the crown jewels, the wax heads and the weapons still remain on display at the HOTR. Tom owned and operated the first concession stand there as well. He met many celebrities in his travels all over the world, dined in some of the finest restaurants and stayed in some of the finest hotels, but he was also comfortable making new friends with the guy on the street and knew what it was like to be hungry. He always fought for the underdog and never passed by a beggar without offering food. When Tom had money, everyone had money; he was generous to a fault. Tom was an avid fisherman and musky hunter. He was proud to have received the Fenwick Master Fisherman award in 1981. The one thing in life that brought Tom immense pride was his daughter, Michelle. The early years were good and he spent a lot of time with her, but a bitter divorce from her mother resulted in many legal issues and Tom distanced himself. They stayed in touch and have recently rekindled their relationship but he regretted to his dying day the fact that he did not spend more time with her during many of those difficult years. He was so proud of the woman Michelle has become! Tom also recently reunited with a son he fathered when he was twenty. Times were different then; unwed couples were not accepted and this child had been given up for adoption. Tom had always hoped he would find his son but kept running into dead ends. Michelle recently discovered his whereabouts and Tom described the feeling of hearing from his son, Richard, as one of the greatest gifts he could have received in his life, along with the birth of Michelle. Tom’s “live for today” behavior coupled with genetic predispositions for bipolar and heart trouble resulted in many serious health issues developing in the past two decades. He suffered from complications of congestive heart failure, diabetes and kidney disease. He underwent heart bypass, mitral valve and abdominal surgeries over the years. Still, he would have lived no other way. He needed to be involved in the action, loved current events and socializing. He could get on an elevator and befriend someone by the time he arrived at the next floor. Tom had a number of marriages in his lifetime but his last, to Elizabeth “Beth” Bradley lasted 28 years until his death. During that time they bred and showed Bernese Mtn dogs. Tom designed and built Alligator Alley on Wisconsin Dells. He and Beth leased and operated Serpent Safari in the Dells in the late 90’s caring for some of the largest and most rare reptiles in the world! Tom took a serious fall at the zoo which resulted in a lasting disability and they had to give it up shortly after opening. He loved all animals and especially Beth’s Bernese Mountain Dogs and his “buddy” Rufus, a noisy little miniature schnauzer that worshipped the ground Tom walked on. They spent a few years traveling all over the United States an enjoyed musky fishing in the Eagle river area. Besides Beth, her family and his two children, Tom is survived by his sisters, Carol (Jim) Quale and Shannon (Dave) McKichan. He is further survived by brothers Mike, Doug (Debbie) and Joey (Theresa) Bradley and all their wonderful families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Scott, Dick, Kim and Tim. He loved his good friends, Dan Schuld, Dave Klotz and Jim Snyder. Tom wanted to thank Dr. Hamburg and Dr. Carlson at Dean Healthcare as well as Dr. Phelan, Dr. Jung and Dr. Jordan at St. Mary’s in Madison for their excellent care the past two decades and for “ keeping me alive in spite of myself. ” Tom’s family thanks SSM Health at Home Hospice nursing staff and the Baldwin Funeral Home in Baraboo for their assistance. A picnic will be held this fall to share memories. Tom loved life and had a big heart; he tried his best and was a survivor. His life attitude was reflected in his favorite song by Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World.

Marilyn Karch, age 92 of Baraboo, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2020 at St. Clare Hospital. Marilyn Karch was born in Viola, Wisconsin in 1927, the third of four children to cheesemakers Derward and Eva Lepley. After enduring some tough times in the Depression, the family moved from the country to Milwaukee and Marilyn attended the very large Western Division High School, where she finished at the top of her class. An English teacher thought so much of Marilyn’s intellect and ability that she organized scholarships for Marilyn to attend Downer College. Marilyn wanted to be a nurse so she transferred to Madison General Hospital Nursing School, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. She was introduced by her roommate to musician and law student Jim Karch, and they were married in 1953 before moving to Baraboo where she worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Ringling Hospital. In another time or place, she might have continued her nursing career uninterrupted, but with five children at home she left work to raise them. Her middle child, Kim, died of leukemia when 5 years old, a loss that stayed with Marilyn all her life. She strongly encouraged her children to study hard, to think for themselves, and to recognize the sometimes harsh realities of human society. Overcoming her discomfort with conflict or speaking up, she became a contributor to and leader in community, church, and school organizations. Marilyn had a strong circle of friends who appreciated her giving nature, intelligence, and quick wit. She returned to nursing when her children were able to take care of themselves and worked for many years at Jefferson Meadows and St. Clare Hospital. Marilyn and Jim took advantage of their empty nest to spend several years in Northern Wisconsin near Crandon, in addition to much time camping with a RoadTrek Van, including a summer living and working at Old Faithful in Yellowstone. She also spent a lot of time with grandchildren, on trips, attending sporting and music events, playing games and providing much needed extra help to granddaughters with special needs. Marilyn loved to read classics, novels, and mysteries, and instilled that love in her children and grandchildren. She also loved birds, wild flowers and spending time outdoors hiking and gardening. Marilyn and Jim liked to help others in many ways large and small, including delivering Meals on Wheels and volunteering with both local and international Habitat for Humanity. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Don and Derward; sister, Jeannie; daughter, Kim. She is survived by her husband, Jim; sons, Gary (Ann Beal), Glen Ellyn, IL, Paul (Anne Sontag), Madison, WI, Julie (Doug Matthews), San Diego, CA, and Sharon (John Nielsen), Woodbury, MN; grandchildren, David (Brynn), Aaron, Rachel, Lydia, Sam (Kate) and Chas (Sally) Karch, Mark and Russell Matthews, Paul and Beth Nielsen; and many nieces and nephews.
