Portage - Gordon
“Gordy” L. Sumwalt, age 70, of Portage, was at home with his family when he
went peacefully to his eternal heavenly home on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017. He was
born in Hillpoint on Dec. 31, 1946 to Lawrence and Marcella Sumwalt. He lived
in the township of Caledonia since 1974 in the house that he designed and
built. Gordy was united in marriage to Laurene Rockhill on May 16, 1970 in
Madison.
Gordy was a
gentle, loving, and generous husband, father, grandfather and servant of God.
He had his own construction and home inspection businesses for many years.
Among Gordy’s special interests were model trains, history, Creation and the
Tabernacle. He enjoyed helping others. He was always ready to take on new
adventures including leading several Safety Patrol trips to Washington, DC;
driving a stock car, school buses and charter buses; and leading the Boys’
Brigade. His church activities ranged from serving as a Deacon, managing the
church library and lending his handyman skills for all manner of needs.
If you had a question on most any subject or
needed help you could be sure Gordy would be there for you.
Gordy is
survived by his wife of 47 years, Laurene; his children, Julie and David
(Melissa); grandchildren, Cassondra, Parker and Isabella; brother, Mel (Kim); and
sister-in-law, Barbara; special canine companion, Benson; and many other dear
family members and friends.
In addition
to his parents, Gordy was preceded in leaving for heaven by his brother, Dean.
Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017 at CrossPoint Assembly
of God Church, 2727 County Rd. CX, Portage, with Rev. Randy Mantik officiating.
Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services.
Private family interment will take place in Shanks Cemetery in Caledonia
Township, Columbia County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the
family to be forwarded to the Answers in Genesis Ministry. The Rago-Baldwin
Funeral Home, 520 East St., Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family
would like to thank the SSM Health at Home Hospice for the wonderful care given
to Gordy during his last months on earth.
