Mary Maurine (Mobberly) Newgent
Green Lake - Mary Maurine (Mobberly) Newgent, 88, of Green Lake, formerly of Baraboo, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at Kindred Hearts of Green Lake, in Green Lake. Mary was born to Maureau Bert Mobberly and Bonnie Gene Pugh on Nov. 18, 1924 in Panhandle, Texas. Mary followed her three older sisters to Texas College for Women (presently,Texas Woman’s University) in Denton, Texas. Later, Mary attend Central College in Fayetteville, Ark., where she met Frank William Newgent, Jr., and the couple were united in marriage on Dec. 21, 1946. Mary and Frank moved to Chicago and then Normal, Ill., where her daughter and son were born. A job with the State of Wisconsin brought the couple to Madison, where they raised their family. Mary was always active in the League of Women Voters. She was active in politics in Dane County where she became the first female County Board Supervisor. Mary represented the county well in working to develop Govenor Dodge State Park, the Dane County Coliseum, and many other projects. Frank’s job took her to Washington D.C. and Prairie du Chien. Retirement brought them to Portage to their lake cottage. Mary enjoyed her days gardening and watching birds in the woods. She was instrumental in obtaining a Grant to start the Laubach literacy program for adults, for the state of Wisconsin, then traveling the state training tutors in the Laubach methods. Mary enjoyed playing the part of Zona Gale for the Zona Gale museum in Portage. She never knew a stranger and exhibited her Southern gentility to the end of her life in her kind ways with others and gratefulness for those who cared for her. After Frank passed away in December of 2002, Mary lived with Eric and Janie until the Alzheimer’s required her to move to Meadow View Memory Care. In 2012, she followed her son to Green Lake, where she resided at Kindred Heart’s Memory Care until her passing on Nov. 7th. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, and husband. Surviving is her daughter, Dr. Kevin Dartt, Ed.D. and her husband, Tom, of Denton, Texas; a son, Dr. Eric Newgent, D.O. and his wife, Janie, of Green Lake; eight grandchildren, Andrew Dartt (Holly) of Lubbock, Texas, Meredith Rotz (Jonathan) of Little Elm, Texas, Leah Bartlett (Neil) of Lewisville, Texas, Levi Dartt (Rachel) of Lake Dallas, Texas, Ruth Blankenfeld (Tanner) of Denton, Texas, Marianne Brinker (Brent) of Baraboo, Elizabeth Gale (Steve) of Omaha, Neb, and Michelle Newgent of Green Lake. Also surviving are 24 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at the Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., Baraboo. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:30 am until time of service.
