Patrick B. Dougherty, 75, of rural Portage, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at his home in the Baraboo Bluffs following a difficult battle with COPD and cancer. Pat was born on August 23, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Lawrence and Helen (Bain) Dougherty. Preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Dougherty; step-father, Thomas Daniels; mother, Helen (Bain); sister, Sr. Catherine Anne; and brother, Robert Dougherty. In 1964, he married his wife, Marbeth Schilke and they were blessed with five children. Friends and family will remember Pat’s gift for story telling always with a bit of blarney. Holiday meals would end with everyone sitting around listening to one tale after another from his youth on the streets of Chicago ranging from his time spent at St. Edwards Catholic grammar school to memories of his children in their youth. A devout Catholic, Pat sang in the church choir as a child. His favorite song was the Pange Lingua sung in Latin as the choir walked around the church. As an adult Pat became a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion, reader and proclaimer of intersessions in the many parishes he was a member of over his 75 years. An Irishman through and through, Pat was a huge fan of Notre Dame football and enjoyed many games in South Bend Indiana watching the Fighting Irish. The Chicago born city boy loved the country and spent his life living in rural areas blessed with the best neighbors a person could hope for. Pat is survived in death by his wife, Marbeth (Schilke) Dougherty; children, Kellyann (Dougherty) Presley and husband, Charlie Presley, John Dougherty and wife, Lisa (Simerson) Dougherty, Kathleen (Mueller) Dougherty and husband, Hans Mueller, Heather (Montes) Dougherty and husband, Enrique Montes; along with Pat’s grandchildren, Melissa (Simerson) and husband, John Jinnings, and Alicia, Joshua, Ethan, and Owen. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Baraboo, with Fr. Jared Holzhuter officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of mass. Inurnment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Medical Missionaries of Mary or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
