William “Bill” J. Smith, age 82, of Baraboo, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at St. Clare Hospice House. Bill was born on June 9, 1930 in Ableman (Rock Springs), the son of William H. and Alice (Bayer) Smith. Bill was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country from Jan. 1956 to Oct. of 1957. On April 25, 1956 he was united in marriage to Iona Govier in California. Bill was third generation well driller following in the footsteps of his grandparents. He was a lifetime member of the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Club, and enjoyed sharing memories with all the people he met. Drilling and meeting people was Bill’s life. He is survived by his wife, Iona, three children, Karen Smith of Madison, David Smith and Ellen Smith, both of Baraboo; and a sister, Jean E. Smith of Baraboo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Private Funeral Services will be held at the Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., in Baraboo, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom. In memory of Bill, memorials can be given to the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Club.
