William Arthur "Bill" Radtke

West Baraboo - William Arthur “Bill” Radtke, age 85, of West Baraboo, passed from this world to join his heavenly family on Thursday, April 18, 2013 following a brief illness. According to his wishes, he died at home surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born Dec. 27, 1927 in Baraboo, the son of William Fredrick and Lillian Marie (Kunzelman) Radtke. After graduating high school, Bill worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad from 1945 to 1955. He took a leave of absence to serve his country in the United States Army during WWII from 1946 to 1947. After working with the railroad, he began employment with Cessna Aviation in Chicago until moving to Baraboo in 1960. Bill then became owner-operator of Kunzelman’s Ice Cream Parlor, on the square, as a third generation owner. Other careers included, delivering milk for Valley Gold Dairy, laundry delivery for Badger Laundry and Dry Cleaning, working at Leahy American Motor of Baraboo, the Badger Army Ordnance Works as a heavy equipment operator for over 12 years, and worked in security and in the purchasing department for St. Clare Hospital for over 18 years. In addition, his most cherished job was a school bus driver, for over 22years, where he became known as “Mr. Bill” by all of his kids. Bill was united in marriage to Lillian Pearl Scheffert, on October 24, 1969 in Baraboo. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2010. Some of his hobbies included feeding the birds and squirrels, tending to his yard, anything related to old cars, traveling in his R.V. to down South or out West, and once traveling wasn’t an option, Bill loved to tape TV shows and movies to share with his family. Bill had a love for dogs, and in recent years, he could be seen riding his scooter around town with his canine companion Pookie, whether it was going to garage sales, picking-up aluminum cans, visiting his neighbors, tending the flowers on the graves of his wife, parents and grandparents, or to join his dear friends for breakfast at the Four Star Family Restaurant. In addition, he was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 688. Survivors include six stepchildren, Patricia (Louie White) Jeglum of Cecil, Rose Anne (Roger) Ringelman of Weirsdale, Fla., David (Dianne) Kehoe of Baraboo, Daniel (Sheree) Kehoe of Madison, Jeanne (Bennett) Miller of Arapaho, Okla., and Kevin (Rene) Kehoe of Bessie, Okla.; 18 step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; and one step- great-great grandchild. In addition to his wife, and parents, Bill was preceded in death by his stepson, William Kehoe; and his step-grandson, Ryan Ringelman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the West Baraboo Church of God, 150 Shaw St., in West Baraboo, with Pastor Derick Bacon and Pastor William “Bill” Haskins officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sauk County Human Society. The Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., in Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements. Bill’s family expresses their thanks to the staff of St. Clare Hospital, and especially to all the angles at Home Health United Hospice, including Alecia, Kay, Julie, June and Sally. They made sure Bill’s journey home was as comfortable as possible.
