Lauren Rockhill

Portage - Lauren Rockhill, age 92, of Portage passed away peacefully, with loved ones at his side, on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo. Lauren was born on Feb. 24, 1920 in Gillingham, the son of Lemard and Opal Rockhill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII where he received an Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart. On April 6, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ardis Meyer at the West Baraboo Church of God. She preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 1998. Together, they farmed in the Rock Springs area for nine years before moving to a farm in Caledonia Township. Over the years, in addition to raising their own family, they provided a loving home to foster children. Lauren was an extremely generous man with a friendly nature and a deep faith in God. He was an active member in New Life Community Advent Christian Church in Baraboo. He is survived by his special friend, Bev, of Wisconsin Dells; son, John (Juanita) Rockhill of Cambria; daughters, Laurene (Gordon) Sumwalt and Ruth (James) Rehdantz, both of Portage, and Cheryl Parr of Baraboo; sisters, Thelma Capps and Velma Tobias, both of Baraboo, Edith White of Reedsburg, and Wanda (Bill) Terry of LaValle; along with nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Everell, Albert, Ernest, Everett and Willard; sisters, Neva, Elma, Ellen; and a son-in-law, Scott Parr. At Lauren’s request, there will be no formal funeral services; burial will take place in Pine Hill Cemetery in Rock Springs. The Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., in Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
